The Audi quattro is credited with having made popular the idea of four-wheel drive for on-road performance cars. Based on the drivetrain of the off-road VW Iltis, the Audi quattro blended unasialable grip with turbo power to produce a formidable rally competition machine and an all-weather supercar. The quattro started off with a single cam 2144cc engine in 1980, with revisions in 1983 (pneumatic diff. locking, revised gear vratios and anti-lock brakes). The very rare Sport quattro of 1984 was a shorter and more powerful homologation special, and spawned the amazing S1 rally car with it’s huge wings and over 500bhp power unit. Great stuff!
