This series of models was marketed by BMW in four seat saloon, hatchback and convertible variants. They were better known as the ‘Neue Klasse’ compact saloons that were hugely successful in the showroom and on the race track. Progressively better and ‘swifter’ from the initial 1600-2 to the definitive and legendary 2-litre 2002, twin-cab 2002 ti, the rapid fuel injected 2002 tii and the brilliant turbo charged 2002 TKI that gave birth to the now extremely rare 2002 Turbo road car of 1973/74. This model came only in left hand drive and was extremely quick and tricky to drive because of turbo-lag (common in the early days of turbo technology). Unfortunately the release of this model was also short-lived because of the 1973 oil crisis.*
